Guidelines for Applicants

[ Step 4 ] How to apply

There is no formal application form - only a short Registration Form to give us basic information which you should complete and send with your application. Click here to download

Your application should be no more than four sides of A4 and should address the questions below. You should also enclose the budget for the work which you are applying for, plus a copy of the budget for the whole organisation, and your last Annual Report and Accounts if you produce one. You should also enclose the completed Registration Form.

The application should answer the following questions:

    1. What are the aims of your organisation as a whole?
    2. How do you try to achieve these aims?
    3. How does your proposal -
          • Make a lasting difference to people's lives rather than simply alleviating the symptoms or current problems
          • Reduce isolation, stigma and discrimination or
          • Encourage or enable unpopular groups to share in the life of the whole community
    4. Why is yours an unpopular cause or beneficiary group?
    5. What do you want our grant to pay for?
    6. What difference would this grant make to your work?
    7. How much will the work cost?
    8. Are you asking the Foundation to meet the whole cost?
    9. What other sources of funding are you approaching?
    10. How will you know if the work has been successful?
    11. How will the work, and the way it is done, promote equal opportunities? If you do not think equal opportunities are relevant to your work please say why.

All applications should be made to the Foundation's office and not sent to individual Trustees. If you have any queries about making an application you are encouraged to telephone the office for clarification.

Applications are processed continuously. When we have received your application we will be in touch (usually within two weeks)

  • to ask for any further information
  • to tell you if your application will be put forward to the next stage of assessment and a timetable for a final decision
  • or to tell you that we cannot help

Processing an application and making a grant usually takes between two and six months.

If further information is needed this will be requested and a visit may be arranged where the application can be discussed in more detail.

Are you eligible to apply for a grant within the current priorities of the Foundation?

To be eligible you should be able to answer yes to all of the following questions:

  • Does your work benefit people from one or more of our priority groups?
  • Are you confident that your application is not subject to any of the exclusions listed?
  • If your work relates to a relatively local area – for example a town, village or small community, was your income last year less than about £100,000? Or
  • If your work covers a wider area – for example a county, region or is country-wide - was your income last year less than about £250,000?
  • Is it more than a year since you last applied to the Foundation?
  • Does your work take place in the UK?
  • Does your work take place outside London?
